As an information system for enterprise data integration and decision support, business intelligence (BI) has received extensive attention in theory and practice. However, there is no research toward the frontiers and the themes evolution of BI. It was combed and reviewed the theoretical research in the field of BI in Web of Science in the past 30 years (1990—2020) through bibliometric methods to reveal research topics and evolution trends, provide ideas and lay the foundation for the future research. The results show that the amount of BI research literature is in a rapid period with a high research potential. The United States is at the forefront of BI research, and China is not influential enough among the international. Currently BI mainly focuses on the management information systems, and the key research topics for the future are BI and big data, risks and challenges of BI, BI and innovation, and BI and predictive analytics.
