Abstract:
Background, aim, and scope As an important part of the terrestrial hydrosphere, lakes not only participate in the natural water cycle, but also have the functions of providing water, regulating floods and maintaining the health of the ecological environment. It is very important to study the dynamic change of lake area and discuss the response of lake area dynamics to climate change, which is of great important practical significance to the rational utilization of water resources and the protection of ecological environment. In this study, the Jiaodong Peninsula was taken as study area to investigate the change characteristics of lake area and to reveal its response to climate change in the past 33 years, which would provide scientific basis and guidance for the rational development and utilization of water resources in Jiaodong Peninsula. Materials and methods Based on Landsat remote sensing image data from 1985 to 2017, this study extracted the lake area and quantity information of the Jiaodong Peninsula. The main aims were to investigate the change characteristics of lake area and to reveal its response to climate change in the past 33 years. Results The lake area and quantity fluctuated and decreased from 1985 to 2017, with a total decrease of 100.02 km2 and 79, respectively. The lake area with patch area ranging from 0.01 km2 to 0.1 km2 fluctuated and increased from 1985 to 2017, while the lake area of other grade fluctuated and decreased, especially for the lakes with area more than 10 km2. Discussion The lake area was positively correlated with annual precipitation in the Jiaodong Peninsula, with a significant level above 0.05, while the lake area was negatively correlated with the temperature, but not significantly. The precipitation threshold affecting the abrupt change of lake area in Jiaodong Peninsula was about 626.9 mm, showing that when the annual precipitation was less than 626.9 mm, the lake area decreased sharply with the decrease of precipitation. While the precipitation is higher than 626.9 mm, the lake area increased steadily with the increase of precipitation. The project of “Diversion from Yellow River to Qingdao” had a great impact on the area of large lakes, and it played an important role in the sustainable development of natural ecological environment and social economy of Jiaodong Peninsula. Conclusions The lake area and quantity in Jiaodong Peninsula fluctuated and decreased from 1985 to 2017. The change of lake area is mainly controlled by the amount of annual precipitation, with a critical value of 626.9 mm. Recommendations and perspectives In order to investigate the changing process of lake area in more detail, the temporal resolution of remote sensing images should be improved. The relationships between lake area and natural factors and human activity factors will be simulated to forecast the changes of lake area in the future. The study will provide scientific support for water management of lakes in Jiaodong Peninsula.
