Abstract:
Background, aim, and scope The coordinated development of the production-living-ecological function is a hot issue in sustainable development research. Exploring the symbiosis and tradeoff of the production-living-ecological function can provide theoretical support for sustainable development and the promotion of the upper reaches of the Yellow River. In this paper, taking the upper reaches of the Yellow River as the research object, we aim to analyze the evolution trend of the production-living-ecological function and reveal the spatio-temporal characteristics and evolution law of its coupling coordination in order to provide theoretical support for the coordinated development of the production-ecological function in the upper reaches of the Yellow River and a scientific basis for regional coordinated development. Materials and methods Based on the evaluation index system of the production-living-ecological function, the triangle model and coupling coordination degree model were used to analyze the state and trend of the production-living-ecological function and the evolution law of coupling coordination in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. Results The results showed that the production and living functions increased significantly in the upper reaches of the Yellow River from 1998 to 2017, and the growth rates of the production and living functions were slightly higher than those of the ecological function. The interaction of the three functions developed slowly from a very low level, experienced low and medium levels successively, and finally developed to a high level. The level of coupling coordination developed from a low level to a moderate wave type. Shaanxi Province had a relatively high level of coupling coordination, which is still somewhat short of a high level of coordination. Discussion The three main functions had an upward trend as a whole. The production and living functions developed rapidly and had relatively close trends, which mainly depended on the development levels of sub-functions, such as agricultural production, economic production, and entertainment, in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. The ecological function had a relatively slow development speed but developed upward. Both ecological purification and maintenance functions played an important role. The development of the three main functions varied in each province, which is not only affected by sub-functions but also guided by policies. The overall level of coupling coordination of the production-living-ecological function had the characteristics of developing from severe imbalance to a moderately coordinated state. The synergy among the production, living and ecological functions continued to strengthen in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, but the degree of coupling coordination varies among different provinces. There were differences in horizontal development, among which the coordinated development between the production and ecological functions, especially the sub-functions such as culture and education, employment security, housing, social security, entertainment, and transportation functions, was the key to restricting sustainable development of the production-living-ecological function, especially the impact of sub-functions such as culture and education, employment security, housing, social security, entertainment, and transportation functions. Conclusions In the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the functions of culture and education, employment security and housing contribute to the coupling and coordination of the production-living-ecological function and promote the coordinated development of the functions to achieve regional sustainable development. Recommendations and perspectives On the issue of sustainable development in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, differentiated strategies should be formulated according to the coupling characteristics and influencing factors of the production-living-ecological function to resolve the contradiction between the production and ecological functions.
